Frequently Asked Questions

What is “short-run digital printing”?
This is printing done through either our Canon CLC1150 Color Laser Copier or B&W imaged through our Canon ImageRUNNER 550. We can print documents from our Macs directly to the CLC1150 and the ImageRUNNER 550. For short quantities this type of printing is more economical than offset printing.

What is “large-format printing”?
This is imaging output on our ENCAD NovaJet 700 Inkjet printer. This printer produces images up to 5 feet wide and as long as you may require.

What applications do you support?
We accept Quark XPress, Adobe PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe PhotoShop, Macromedia Freehand and Microsoft Word.

Do I need to worry about trapping in my electronic files?
No. Sim’s Press utilizes state-of-the-art Scitex RIPs with Scitex Full-Auto-Frame trapping.

Do I need to imposition or make my multi page document into printer spreads?
No. Sim’s Press uses Preps imposition software to impose pages.

Why do I need to specify a linescreen for scanning, film output or printing?
The paper you’re printing on is the biggest factor in determining what linescreen (printed dots per inch) you use. Newspapers typically use a course 85 linescreen, web-printed magazines 133 linescreen, uncoated sheetfed 150 linescreen, coated papers 175-200 linescreen. The resolution of the scans should be approximately twice the linescreen (i.e.—150 linescreen would require a 300 pixel per inch scan).

Why do I need to supply fonts with my electronic files?
Your fonts are needed to imageset your pages. We have an extensis collection of Bitstream and Adobe fonts, but unless we have the same fonts used in your document, you may experience reflow problems. We need both the screen (for viewing) and printer (for printing) fonts in order to image your job.

How should I gather files to be output?
In QuarkXPress, use “Collect For Output”, which is under the FILE menu. In PageMaker, use “Save For Service Provider” (don’t embed the graphics into the PageMaker document), which is under UTILITIES/PLUG-INS.

What types of proofs do you offer?
We offer b&w laser, Canon color laser (not to be used for final color proofing), IRIS digital color proofs, Pressmatch color proofs, Velox b&w proofs, and Dylux proofs. An IRIS is a digital color proof, produced without the need of film, however, we recommend proofing final four color film with a PressMatch proof. Velox proofs are made by exposing through negative film to produce a crisp b&w proof. A Dylux proof (also called a blueline or salt print), is used to show positioning of your final imposed or stripped job.

What type of printing do you do?
We do sheetfed offset printing using four different presses. Our maximum sheetsize is ?? X ??, and the maximum imageable area is ?? X ??.

What type of paper should I use?
We stock a wide variety of papers, and can order thousands of different papers for next day delivery. Speak with a customer service representative to help you select the right paper for your job .
